Because it is convenient for preservation and portability, early writers generally chose to donate. However, due to the high price of donation, after the emergence of Shuxuan, people began to use more Shuxuan. But now the painting materials are more abundant, and painters have more choices when painting Chinese paintings. They don't have to use rice paper, they can try more painting materials

These three kinds of rice paper draw different paintings. First, Shengxuan is now mostly a freehand painting, freehand landscape painting. Because Shengxuan has a very good water absorption, it is easy to produce rich ink rhyme changes and is suitable for painting modes such as ink splashing and ink accumulation. Second, cooked Xuan is usually coated with alum, and the paper is more dense and less absorbent, so the characteristics of cooked Xuan make it suitable for painting fine brushwork rather than ink freehand brushwork. Its disadvantage is that "alum leakage" or embrittlement will occur after long storage. Cooked Xuan can be reprocessed. Coral, mica paper, cold gold, wine gold, waxy golden rib, pink tiger skin, etc. are reprocessed flower colored paper from cooked Xuan. Third, semi ripe Xuan is also processed from raw Xuan. Its water absorption capacity is between the first two. "Yuban Xuan" belongs to this category and is suitable for painting small freehand flowers and birds
